If you’ve been reading my blogs, you likely know by now that one of the fundamental truths about being human is that your thinking controls how you feel, and how you feel drives everything you do or don’t do in your life. So how you intentionally think ultimately creates your life. Thoughts, for sure, come without prompting. Thousands of them a day (and let’s be honest, some can be bizarre and even disturbing). But we can always notice, interrupt them, and decide on purpose what to think – and especially what to make things mean.

I’ve seen this proven true time and again. Yet there are times when our thoughts are so hard to identify that we simply can’t become aware of them clearly, in a way that allows us to work on them. In fact, even when you think you know what you’re thinking, there are huge benefits to having someone help you see your thoughts for what they are. Optional. That is the most fundamental benefit of having a coach. They help point out things you’re speaking as truths, and offering you optional thoughts. It’s to help show you your own mind in a way that’s difficult to do on your own. And believe me, you never don’t need one. I’ve been a coach for several years now, and I still work with a coach typically once a week.

However, there are times when you may feel like ass and you just can’t get to your thoughts and you don’t have the benefit of immediate access to a coach. In those times, I’m all about taking some action to change how you feel. Pay attention to what you are physically doing in the immediate moment. Are you not moving, head down, staring at a screen or the floor? Getting up, walking around the house or block, standing tall, are all simple yet effective ways to get you feeling emotionally more clear. Literally just jumping up and down to get some energy in your body can help open your creative juices and get you thinking in a different way.

Go for a walk where you breathe deep and pay attention to all of your surroundings. Don’t just imagine yourself doing it, get your ass outside and do it! Yelling as loud as you can in a silly or powerful way (not at someone) to hear your own voice and make yourself laugh. Wiggling or dancing to your favorite music. Or even doing something physically productive, like working out, cleaning your house, or doing yardwork.

So is it your thoughts or is it your actions that create a life you want? Well, moment to moment, it’s both. Use whichever will serve you in the moment. When your thoughts are hard to see clearly, get your body moving in a productive way. Then take time to contemplate the nature of your intentional thoughts. Interrupt thoughts that don’t serve you and replace them with ones that do. Be intentional about creating a life you want.
